Oxidative stress and pregnancy Role of reactive oxygen species in gynecologic diseases

چکیده
Free radicals derived from molecular oxygen and nitrogen are highly reactive metabolites called reactive oxygen species (ROS). Cells continuously produce free radicals and ROS as part of the metabolic process. They are involved in the various functions of the reproductive system. Antioxidants are enzymes or compounds that scavenge and reduce the presence of free radicals. Normally, a balance exists between concentrations of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant scavenging systems. The disruption of the delicate balance between proand antioxidants results in oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has been implicated in embryo fragmentation, DNA damage, apoptosis and poor pregnancy outcome. It has also been implicated in a large number of gynecologic diseases, such as endometriosis, pre-eclampsia and maternal diabetes. The use of antioxidants may be beneficial in combating the harmful effects of oxidative stress in many of these diseases. The present review outlines the importance of these species in the pathology of various gynecologic diseases. (Reprod Med Biol 2004; 3: 177–199)

Oxidative Stress and its Role in Female Infertility and Assisted Reproduction: Clinical Implications
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in physiological functions and act as mediators in various signaling processes. Elevated or sustained generation of free radicals and non radical species derived from free radicals can lead to an imbalance in the intracellular redox homeostasis. Normally, any excess levels of reactive radical and nonradical species generated are intercepted by antioxid...

Abstract During normal cellular activities Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Reactive Nitrogen Species (RNS) are produced. In addition to beneficial functions they play a critical role in cell death and prevent apoptosis. Every cell is equipped with an extensive antioxidant defense system to combat the excessive production of active radicals. Oxidative stress occurs with destruction of cellu...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW To review the role of oxidative stress in the context of female fertility. RECENT FINDINGS Oxidative stress is associated with decreased female fertility in animal and in-vitro models, but no studies to date have directly assessed the relationship in women. Exposures associated with oxidative stress and with evidence to influence the timing and maintenance of a viable pregna...
متن کاملCritical role of GSH in Sulfur Mustard-induced Oxidative Stress and Cytotoxicity in Human Skin Fibroblast Cell Line
In this study the role of glutathione (GSH) in sulfur mustard -induced oxidative stress and cytotoxicity, in human skin fibroblast cell line (HF2FF) was evaluated. Sulfur mustard-induced superoxide radical and hydrogen peroxide formation were evaluated by determination of superoxide dismutase and catalase activity in cell lysate. The cytotoxicity of sulfur mustard was estimated by lactate dehyd...
